Summary: You are more than “just a girl”, you are a warrior. You are a hero. Or at least you were meant to be. In her book Girls With Swords: How to Carry Your Cross Like a Hero, Lisa Bevere shows women (and girls) why it is so very important for them to truly know and understand God’s Word. She reminds readers that there is more to life than just what is seen with the eyes. Life is a spiritual battlefield and God’s Word is the sword. Knowing God’s Word and how to apply it properly to life’s situations is vital. The enemy knows who belongs to God and that makes them a serious target.
Review: Good words. Yeah, I know. Helpful, right? Right off the bat I came across two very “wow” quotes. They’re both found in the first chapter, one on page six and the other on page seven. “Satan has made it his aim to distract you from who you really are and what the purpose of your life truly is.” (pg. 6) and “I believe that the attacks on your life have much more to do with who you might be in the future than who you have been in the past.” (pg. 7). Those two lines pretty much sum up why, in my opinion, it is so vitally important that females really know what God’s Word says. In fact, they are underlined and starred. I usually go over books like this with a fine toothed comb (figuratively speaking, not literally, LOL!) to see if there’s anything to be wary of as far as being biblically sound. Honestly, I didn’t see anything off-base. And right off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything that I went “Um, no…” to.
The book itself is divided up into four parts: Chosen, Equipped, Armed, and Commissioned. Part One deals with, like the title implies, being Chosen by God. Once you become a Christian, and often times even before (since this is a spiritual battle), you’re a target. But, moving into Part Two, we find that we have been fully Equipped by God to stand in the battle. We are Armed with many “swords” (words, harvest, light, song, silence, and forgiveness and restoration) found within the Word of God. And we have been Commissioned to use these swords here on earth.
Recommended for women’s study groups and individual reading.
